Game Review: Prey

Game Review: Prey

I have to admit, Prey and I have had an awful relationship. We met at E3 2005 where she showed off her crazy, world twisting, portal-generating technicals. A year later, we went on a demo date and we made the rounds at least a dozen or two times and I was blown away. When it came to commit at retail though, I just couldn’t pull the trigger. Well, I found her number recently, the price was right ($19.99 on Xbox Games on Demand), and my lifestyle met with hers for a time. Did five years ruin the chemistry?

Surprise! Bungie Is Making An MMO! [Update: Maybe Not?!?!]

We’ve pretty much assumed it for a while now, but at a recent GDC panel, Bungie’s Lead Network Engineer David Aldridge officially unveiled that they’re working on a “massively multiplayer action game” and that it isn’t “WoW in space.” Personally, I’m kinda excited.

Movie Review: The Adjustment Bureau

Movie Review: The Adjustment Bureau

At this point, it seems like it’d be a futile exercise to make a film about fate. I mean c’mon now, everyone saw The Matrix, we get it already. But, The Adjustment Bureau is as clever as its origin – a short story written by the most adapted science fiction author of all time, Philip K. Dick (Blade Runner, A Scanner Darkly) – and as we see the roundabout way the Bureau handles those that defy its plan, we see a more humane take on the eternal question of free will and our ability to choose our destiny.

More Saints Row? Yes, Please!

More Saints Row? Yes, Please!

I was a bit late to the Saints Row party, picking up the second game as a Platinum Hits title for Xbox 360 last holiday. Why? The game’s overzealous “supah gangsta” approach was silly, but I had fallen in love with developer Volition’s last game, Red Faction: Guerrilla, my favorite game of 2009. In the newest Game Informer mag, all is revealed about Saints Row: The Third, which will probably end up being my most-anticipated game of this holiday.

Supreme Court: Westboro Church Can Continue To Be Giant Douchebags

If you’re like me, or just a decent person altogether, then the mere thought of the Westboro Baptist Church may send a palm to your face, a shiver up your spine, or send your stomach churning, but in a near-unanimous ruling by the Supreme Court, America’s highest court sided with the divisive congregation.

Epic Shows Us The Future Of Graphics, Does It Even Matter?

I remember two distinct moments in the past decade where new hardware allowed for new, incredible possibilities in graphics. Behind closed doors at this year’s ongoing Game Developers Conference, Epic showed what would have been another potential moment (see the gorgeous picture above), but this time, I’m not as impressed. Why?

Deus Ex Is The Best Shooter Ever Made, Period

Deus Ex Is The Best Shooter Ever Made, Period

Go buy this game – those opening words of PC Gamer‘s 94% review were enough for me. With my first paycheck ever, I grabbed the foil silver and blue box (back when they were still in their original, monstrous sizes) and made my way to the checkout. At the tender age of 16, I was afraid I was going to be carded because of the game’s Mature rating, denying my acquisition of this absolute beauty – nope! Little did I realize that I was beginning an epic adventure that I would never forget. Long after the Halos, Half-Lifes, and Gears of Wars have stampeded across the action game landscape, Deus Ex is still the Best Shooter Ever Made, Period.

Movie Review: The Fall

Movie Review: The Fall

There’s something very satisfying when a director is able to scrape together his resources and produce the weird, out-of-contention film of their dreams. In Tarsem’s case (The Cell, with Jennifer Lopez), that film happens to be The Fall, a labor of love shot over four years in the world’s most exotic locations. Unfortunately, the film’s thread of a plot just can’t translate these beautiful vistas into a good film.
