‘Strip Search’ Recap: Season 1, Episode 30 “Finale Pt. 1”

Now, we enter the Thunderdome!

The end is drawing near and our three-way elimination is on! Maki, Katie and Abby (all ending in hard Es, of course) have spent the past two months making original comic strips to pitch to Penny Arcade’s Mike and Jerry. Now, they must formulate three more strips based on their new pitches with four hours on the clock. So what did they bring to the stage?


Maki’s “Sufficiently Remarkable”

This strip about relationships with random science bits is plenty amusing. The main narrative reminds me of a pretty popular comic called Questionable Content, a strip I stopped reading when it became a bit too melodramatic after spending hundreds of strips building strong relationships. Anyway, I like this set up and its free-flow structure. I almost wish there was more factoid stuff, but I realize it’s in context. It seems like it could be very compelling over the long-term, but it looks like a slow-burn concept. I’m glad Maki is stepping outside his comfort zone here.
