Survey that wreckage, then claim it!
To be honest, I didn’t even know this game existed until nearly a week ago when it popped up on our forums. Rick Cunningham, one of Relic’s co-founders, split from the company and formed Blackbird Interactive in 2010. In the three years since, it’s been working on Hardware: Shipbreakers, a free-to-play “3D Real-Time Strategy” in the veing of Homeworld, which makes sense because it’s the same guys. They’ve been broadcasting production art for a while now, but today we get to see the game in its honest, functional form.
In Hardware, you lead a scavenging party that’s on the lookout for fortune and plunderous resources in the vast wastes of an alien desert world, a graveyard of busted ships. In the video below, you see the discovery and establishing phases of a new discovery just before combat gets crazy. I’m sorta curious if you’ll be wandering in a linear fashion from wreck to wreck or, as the map seems to hint at, you seek them out amongst the vast desert.
I honestly can’t wait to get this a shot. You can sign up for beta access through their site, but it’s only guaranteed through a $100 tier.
