Newgrounds Relaunches, My Interview With Founder Tom Fulp
Newgrounds, as its tagline suggests, is everything for everyone. Adobe Flash made a crowdsourcing star out of the site with tons of quirky, violent, and comical games and movies before it powered the internet video revolution with sites like YouTube. Founded by Tom Fulp, a kid from Pennsylvania, Newgrounds originally served as a comic book in 1995. The site grew at the turn of the century as its Flash Portal allowed people to upload their work to the site to be judged, then celebrated or blammed (the site’s term for ‘sent to oblivion’). While Newgrounds doesn’t celebrate YouTube’s traffic, it’s developed a cool, insular community. Newgrounds recently launched its first major redesign in over half a decade and I got to sit down with Tom about the new look and feel and how the site is going to move in the future.
Is EVE Online The Best Massively-Multiplayer Game Ever Made?
The Massively Multiplayer Online game is an interesting idea. I mean, just put it on paper: imagine a gaming experience in which each character is another human somewhere on the planet. Far more than a glorified chat room, an MMO allows for not only an expansive universe to reside in, but persistent gameplay that gives you a reason to dive in, and furthermore, a reason to keep coming back. I’ve explained my tentative relationship with these games before, but it seems to me that EVE Online has worked the hardest to fulfill the genre’s potential, even with World of Warcraft dominating and Star Wars: The Old Republic doing well in its own regard. But does that make EVE Online a good game in its own right?
‘Syndicate’ Review – The First Great Shooter Of 2012
This game came out of nowhere and won my heart. The trailer did it first, then the multi-player demo followed up. If an analogy must be made, it must be that Syndicate is a faster-paced Deus Ex: Human Revolution. In the single-player, you’re cast as agent Miles Kilo, a testbed for a powerful new weapons chip that the titanic EuroCorp is about to leverage against its corporate rivals. While the single-player can be a little ho-hum, it’s the co-op multiplayer where the game really shines. Unfortunately, I know many who will be turned away on that fact alone.
Maddox: Our Interview With The Author Of ‘I Am Better Than Your Kids’
I wrote recently about internet star George “Maddox” Ouzounian and how he’d built a miniature empire on destroying virtually anything through elaborate rants on either his web site, The Best Page In The Universe, or through his books. He had fallen off the face of the planet until recently with the release of his new book, I Am Better Than Your Kids. I wanted to chat with the man himself about where he’s been, what he’s doing, and even what phone he’s rocking these days.
Office For iPad Highlights Microsoft’s Biggest Problem
The internet got very excited yesterday with the leaked photo of Office running on an iPad. For those who have been productive in the past decade, you’re familiar with Microsoft’s industry-standard productivity tools, Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, that have kept all of us up through resume building, crappy yard sale flyers, and dire corporate meetings. The company has come out and said that the leaked photo is fake, with the ‘truth to be unveiled in the next few weeks’, but it’s this slow, hesitant attitude to rival platforms that highlights Microsoft’s biggest problem: they’re not on top anymore.
Spotify Is Killing Me; Xbox Live Music Can’t Come Soon Enough
It wasn’t long after Spotify’s Facebook Timeline functionality was unveiled in late September that I gave up on the Zune Pass service that I’d been using for four and a half years. Unfortunately, while Spotify has a social edge, their rubbish software (primarily the Android app) is killing me.
‘Ready Player One’ Review By Ernest Cline – The Novel For MMO Fans
James Halliday is dead. The Willy Wonka-esque creator of the world’s most popular Massively Multiplayer Online game, OASIS, which serves as an escape for many of the Earth’s citizens after the collapse of civilization, has sent out a riddle regarding three keys. The one who can collect these three items will receive the reclusive Halliday’s massive $250 billion fortune and full access to the virtual kingdom he created. The first key is found by Wade, a kid connecting to OASIS out of a dreadful trailer park in Oklahoma. Little does he realize how much is life is going to change.

Microsoft Unveils New Windows 8 Logo. It’s Awful.
Microsoft’s fallen into an odd position. From its re-introduction of Windows Phone while trying to recover Windows sales (after Vista failed to ignite like XP did) to the creeping threat that their dominance of the desktop isn’t going to matter too much going forward, Microsoft has had a lot on its plate. As part of their Windows 8 reinvention, the company unveiled a new logo that fits their new post-PC strategy with the OS.
I hate it.
Minecraft LEGO: The Best Idea In The World? Ever?
The LEGO train keeps chugging! The Danish block maker recently unveiled their officially-themed Minecraft set. Now I don’tk now about you, but this seems like the best cross-promotional tie-in ever. Yes, even better than Taco Bell in Demolition Man.
