Hong Kong. The bright lights, the bustling city, the Triads.

At E3 2012, we got our hands on LOTS of titles and were able to play some really stunning new games and IP’s as well as sequels and reboots of existing games and IP’s. From mobile games to console games to PC games, we spent all of our time there looking at all of the things that are coming up in the near future, as well as some things which are further out toward the horizon.

One of the more exciting experiences I had was when I got my hands on the new IP by Square Enix, known as “Sleeping dogs”.

One of the things I was immediately impressed by when I approached Sleeping Dogs was the concept of Hong Kong cinema style fighting. The game is basically an open-world sandbox story game, with a bit of button masher style fighting game, race game and cops and robbers game mixed in. Think of Grand Theft Auto with a much more intense and detailed combat system.

Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting!

In the demo I played, I started a mission in which I was supposed to find a guy and give him a little message…in the form of a healthy ass-kicking. Through the beginning of the demo, I spent a lot of time chasing him around the area in a parkour style run-down, after which I got in a nice little fight with some of his buddies.

The fighting system is fast and intense, with the ability to grapple, counter enemy attacks, and use the environment to chuck the enemies a solid beating. At the bottom of this article there is a video showing some of the features of the combat system…Let me tell you, it’s a lot of fun!

After I got through the first group of enemies, the chase was back on and I finally ended up running down the bad guy, after which I was faced with a group of enemies again and had to put another beating on them. After I finished up with the group (and throwing a couple of them off the top of the building we were on), I had to fight the guy I’d been chasing, who was swinging a knife at me like a madman. I was able to give him a proper beating and then the demo ended for me, leaving me wanting much, much more.

Sleeping Dogs is scheduled to release on August 8th, 2012 and will be available on PC, PS3, Steam and Xbox 360. If you’re any kind of fan of open world games with racing and fighting and people getting body-slammed on to broken pipes, you’re going to have to check this one out. We certainly look forward to getting to review it for all of you, soon!
