Carnage Review: Leave The Fucking Apartment!

Four adults behave badly in a Brooklyn apartment in Carnage, directed by Roman Polanski and starring Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, and John C. Reilly. This movie seems intent on showing the audience that beneath a thin veneer of civility people are little more than apes throwing shit at one another. I don’t necessarily disagree with that message, but if Polanski & Co. are going to make any broad proclamations about human nature, they need to get the details right. And this movie leaves one gaping plot hole unaddressed, if these two couples hate each other so damn much, why doesn’t the visiting couple leave the fucking apartment?

The Hunger Games Review – Star Wars for Teenage Girls

The Hunger Games Review – Star Wars for Teenage Girls

I took my 13 year-old daughter to the midnight premier of The Hunger Games last night. Every showing was sold out weeks ago and the line stretched around several buildings, with people in tents and lawn chairs blocking traffic. I saw a lot of parents like me who were there with their kids. Teenagers in costumes waved plastic bows and arrows around, and the ratio of girls to guys was probably 4 to 1. I guess teenage girls finally got their Star Wars.

I haven’t seen a movie generate this much hoopla in some time. And while I’m glad I went, the movie is pretty average for the amount of hype it is getting.

Phoenix Comicon ’12, I’m Ready

I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since we covered our first convention event. Before I begin sharing what will be happening this year, I’d like to announce that since I will be the only one covering EVERYTHING, photobombing is a low priority. I know, I died a little inside too. But don’t you worry! When I get a chance to photobomb, I’ll make it count.

Angry Birds Space Arrives!… Is Definitely More Angry Birds!

Today marks the mammoth release of Angry Birds Space, the latest installment in the ubiquitous mobile gaming franchise. Space marks the first real twist in the physics-based puzzle formula as you’re no longer chucking said Angry Birds at ground-based targets, but rather a variety of ground and space-based pigs, all under the variable control of gravity.

George Takei Is The Best Thing To Hit Facebook Since…

Man, don’t you remember the days when fake celebrity accounts on Facebook were just a drag? Sure, that Free iPad sounds super great and your interloper may have spent a super long time studying up on the celebrity they’re impersonating, but once the trick’s revealed, doesn’t the trick seem… less? Riding a new wave from last May’s “It’s Okay To Be Takei“, some glorious bastard has taken up the mantle (or Takei just hired a guy) to promote it with a cleverly updated Facebook page that seems to revel in its in-authenticity. Hulu’s Ad Tailor Thinks I’m An 18-35 Year Old Woman

I don’t like TV, but I love Hulu. Much like a DVR, it allows me to skip all the necessity of having to wait around for something I like to pop up on the screen and then watch it. I grew up on the stuff, but our relationship fell apart in much the same way that mine did with radio: having to stick around to hear people’s crappy playlists sucks. With Hulu, I can cut away time to watch a handful of shows on my own time without having to resort to piracy. But the ads on Hulu. The ads…

Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy Review: The Best Poker Face In The Room

Gary Oldman plays expert spy George Smiley in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Tomas Alfredson’s slick but occasionally muddled adaptation of John le Carre’s classic spy thriller. Alfredson directs the film with the same inventiveness and eye for detail that he brought to the brilliant Let the Right One In, and the cast is stellar. However, the film suffers from being a two hour adaptation of a complex and detailed novel. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is a good movie but not a great movie.

From IGN to VOX Games: The Gaming Journalism Universe, In Picture Form

The recent Whiskey split has been the cap on what’s been an exciting batch of changes, mergers, and acquisitions within the gaming journalism space. But few people realize how deeply rooted some of these outlets are and how many others seem to have appeared from nowhere. The industry is moving and shifting so fast because the industry it’s based on is still relatively new as well. The oldest publication we have listed here is only a few years older than I am.
