Max Payne 3 Review: Not The Rock Star I Was Hoping For

Max Payne 3 Review: Not The Rock Star I Was Hoping For

Max Payne 3 is a pretty good game. It’s lathered in world-class production values, amazing graphics, some pretty tight controls, and it’s a pretty competent shooter in its own right. The first game in the series since 2003’s Max Payne 2: The Fall Of Max Payne by previous developer Remedy, this entry is instead produced by an amalgamation of Rockstar’s studios. This seems pretty coincidental considering Max Payne 3 feels like an amalgamation of other games and movies, rather than a solid creation in its own right. Oh sure, it’s a pretty good game, as I mentioned, but I didn’t buy it to indulge in the Houser brothers‘ love letter to international crime thrillers, I bought it to continue the Max Payne lore. So how does it do in that regard? Not quite as well.

E3 2012 – N’s Predictions

If for some reason you’re not aware, E3 is the world’s biggest gaming event. All the big companies bring out their wares, both soft and hard, in a (sometimes laborious) horse and pony show for the world to see. All the major outlets are there and every gaming eye and ear is paying attention to these industry-shaking announcements. So what will happen at this year’s show? We all have our thoughts on the matter, and being FleshEatingZipper, we know a few things about this industry, so just like Rob did the other day, it’s time to make a few predictions as to what gaming’s movers and shakers will unveil in just two and a half weeks.

Games We’re NOT Going To Be Seeing At E3

Games We’re NOT Going To Be Seeing At E3

No 20th Century, patriotic pants-wearing game characters for us this year!

With our inaugural trip to E3 mere weeks away, we at FleshEatingZipper are obviously excited about the scores of big titles that we’ll be able to get our hands on and report for you. Unfortunately, it’s just as big a disappointment to you as it us to us when companies announce that they’re not going to be bringing their games to the show. With that, let’s get all of our tears out of the way for those titles and move on. Be better together. Somehow…

Building Oceana: The Verge’s Minecraft Pyramid – Week Five

Oceana builder Salaman completing a diagonal

This is part of an ongoing series chronicling the construction of Oceana, an epic Survival-built megastructure on the Vergecraft server. Be sure to check them all out!

Week One – Week Two – Week Three – Week Four – Week Five – Final Week

This past week brought a ton of progress in the Oceana Mega-City Pyramid project. With the Vergecraft’s server white-list open once more, new players are now finally able to stream into our digital frontiers. The list, which had been instituted to limit griefing to existing structures (an issue that, unfortunately, still occurs), was shut off for several weeks. But things are different now. Before we dive into the cool individual accomplishments in the pyramid, let’s talk about the pyramid itself, which has seen a hefty upgrade as it reaches completion.

Can We Bring Back The Racing Game?

Can We Bring Back The Racing Game?

There it lies: a smoldering husk of a car spun off the tarmac into the weeds. Maybe the wheels can still spin, maybe the engine can still pump, but it seems like a lost cause at this point. Racing is a genre that you’d assume would have more heft than, say, snowboarding – which had a renaissance last generation and then quickly vanished with little trace – and yet here we are. Before I bought my first console, my experience with racing games was limited to Mario Kart and Papyrus’ relatively hardcore NASCAR Racing for the PC, but exchanging my keyboard and joystick for a controller was the best way to satiate my need for speed. But what happened? Why did these games disappear?

Building Oceana: The Verge’s Minecraft Pyramid – Week Four

Week One – Week Two – Week Three – Week Four – Week Five – Final Week

And here we are, now a month into the Oceana project. This week the pyramid began to take on its final form and we had to say goodbye to a few elements dear to our massive pyramid. Still, progress has remained steady despite a smaller group of key personnel. The server’s white list has been missing for several weeks now, which has stopped any new gawkers or admirers from being able to view our mighty work. Let’s start off by saying goodbye to Oceana’s original benefactor.

Because I’m A Contrarian Jerk: I Thought The Avengers Was Rubbish

Because I’m A Contrarian Jerk: I Thought The Avengers Was Rubbish

Before we start, let me note that most of the staff thought The Avengers was a pretty good film. You can even read our official review, done by Rob. That said, I came out of the theater with a very different opinion after two and a half hours of superhero malarkey: I thought it kinda sucked. I can’t be the only one in the world to believe so, but I’m obviously in the minority. So what was wrong with The Avengers? A lot. (Also: there are going to be plenty of spoilers, so please don’t advance unless you’ve seen it. Or simply don’t care.)

Could You Disconnect From The Internet For A Year? Would You?

Could You Disconnect From The Internet For A Year? Would You?

If you’ve never connected to the internet, subsequently letting it invade your way of life, a question like this isn’t going to apply. There are still millions of people out there who have no idea how much the globe’s data network can augment their lives. But for those of us who were weaned on it, the prospect of leaving can be a scary one. The Verge’s Paul Miller – and benefactor of that pyramid thing I’ve been working on – set out on an epic journey: leave the internet entirely for a year. Obviously this seems nigh-near impossible for someone who works on a tech news site of all things, but what about you? Could you do it? Would you even want to?

‘Jacked’ Review – Not The Book Grand Theft Auto Deserves

‘Jacked’ Review – Not The Book Grand Theft Auto Deserves

Despite becoming a major form of the entertainment industry with blockbusters like Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty, there haven’t been a whole lot of great books written about gaming’s ascent — unless you like retro gaming. Yeah, Nolan Bushnell founded Atari, which basically created the home console market. Yeah, Miyamoto was a small-time artist at Nintendo who went to become the company’s creative visionary. But when the world receives a book dedicated to one of gaming’s most influential franchises of the past decade, one hopes that it’s a stellar, out-of-the-park experience, especially when it comes from Masters of Doom author Dave Kushner. Unfortunately, this book hardly doesn’t do the controversial, landmark series any justice at all.

Building Oceana: The Verge’s Minecraft Pyramid – Week Three

Week One – Week Two – Week Three – Week Four – Week Five – Final Week

It’s hard to believe it’s already been twenty-one days since we started this project. My Minecraft statistics say I’ve put about nine and a half days on the Vergecraft server in the past two months, which by itself ranks as one of my most played games ever. After capping the pyramid last week, this last shift consisted of more menial, tedious tasks such as completing the infrastructure on the lower levels. That isn’t to say we didn’t accomplish some cool tasks in the other spaces, such as Happypizzza’s completion of the external glass casing along the entire first level (that’s a lot of glass!). Last week we only had two squares (of the total fifty-five) built and now we’re at roughly triple that. So what went down in Oceana this week? Read the rest of this article…
