Microsoft Buys Yammer & People Flip Out For No Reason
It was just a matter of time until the enterprise social network, Yammer was to be acquired. Microsoft was the one to pull the trigger buying Yammer for $1.2 billion in cash. It’s funny to see people that have never heard of Yammer flip out on Microsoft for buying a social network. Let me break this down for people who have no idea so they don’t sound dumb in comments on other websites. Read the rest of this article…
Facebook Edit History Won’t Let You Troll Anymore
Facebook is now rolling out edit history across the board. What does that do exactly you might ask? Well, if you edit one of your comments it will keep a history of the changes for all to see. So if you are like me and quick to hit enter before you are done with thoughts then there will be a trail for everyone to look at. One thing I noticed was, if you delete a comment there is no history so might as well delete them and try again. That won’t help if you are trying to troll people though. Take a look at the screen shot below. Read the rest of this article…
Why We’re Staying Away From The Official Facebook Plugin for WordPress, For Now
Our site, like 5 million+ others uses WordPress for our CMS of choice. We (read I) have extended WordPress beyond it’s basic posts and pages functionality to use custom post types for our different sections and a countless other modifications to make it work the way we want it to work. We use a lot of Facebook plugins like comments, like boxes and buttons so naturally I was excited when Nick let me know that Facebook has finally come out with an official plugin. That was until I read the support forum. Read the rest of this article…
Sorry Swype, And Imma Let You Finish, But SwiftKey Is The Best Android Keyboard Of All Time
Even my keyboard knows what’s real.
It didn’t take long after I’d downloaded the SwiftKey trial on my Epic that I went to Google and said ‘take my dollars’. Then I used a Windows Phone and thought that, honestly, it had the best software keyboard around. From the slight knocks as you enter each character to the incredible prediction it had built it, and the Metro look, I didn’t think SwiftKey would quite top it. Well, with a slight tweak in version 3, SwiftKey has regained control of the virtual keyboard world.
Is Windows Phone 8 Enough? No.
Let’s be honest: Microsoft needs to include a chunk of gold with every Windows Phone to begin to take down iOS or Android. Already in a haggard situation, Microsoft isn’t taking advantage of its hardware providers or its advantage as a game maker through Xbox to make Windows Phone a definitive platform for anything other than third place. But with today’s big announcements on changes to the platform with version 8. But are they enough changes, or drastic enough, that they can start to gain a foothold after two years on the market?
People Still Want A Facebook Dislike Button? Why?
Recently, and probably not for the first time, a malapp has erupted across Facebook, engulfing individual’s profiles under the guise of enabling a hidden Facebook Dislike button. That it’s worked so well speaks volumes of how badly people want to destroy the fabric of Facebook’s spacetime and their relationships with other people. Do people still really want a Dislike button? Why?
Microsoft Surface: Can It Compete With iPad? Does It Need To?
The word is out: Microsoft is building a handsome new tablet for their new Windows 8 operating system. Windows has had several tablet-friendly (well, friendlier) versions since 2000, but this is the first time that they’re converting the entire system into something that will work well with a mobile computer. As a result, Microsoft has also shown off a variety of tablets from partners like Samsung, but they’re taking a different tack by now introducing their own Windows 8 tablet into the fray, chasing their experience in developing hardware, from their own mice and keyboards to the Xbox. It seems that with Surface, Microsoft is opening a full two-front war against with their own OEMs that are producing Windows 8 tablets, but are also tapping Apple on the shoulder to let them know that their iPad isn’t going to be very lonely in this space for long. But does the Surface have what it takes to push Apple out, or does it even matter?
Should You Get The iPhone 4S For Virgin Mobile?
Should you pop your cherry?
There was a time when I loved Virgin Mobile. Heck, I even sold my iPhone 4 just for them! That was back when they offered $25 for unlimited data and texts. When things changed for the worse, I jumped ship. As of yesterday, part of me wished I hadn’t. Why? The iPhone 4S is coming to Virgin Mobile.
From Argo To Xbox Music: The Birth, Life, And Death Of Zune
On the morning of May 11th, 2012, Robbie Bach stood before the Northwest Entrepreneur Network while a PowerPoint projection burned bright behind him. The 50-year old former Microsoft executive was graying at the corners while a “Hello, my name is…” sticker began to peel off his shirt. “If I had hindsight, 20-20, and could do Zune over again,” he started, “we would skip portable media players completely.” As the former head of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices division and 22-year vet, Bach had been invited to give a presentation on intrapreneurship – in which startups are formed inside an already-existing company – and how it was used to create Xbox and Zune under his watch. While one brand had taken off and become Microsoft’s key to the living room, the other’s attempt to ‘kill the iPod’ had failed miserably, despite gaining a cult following and introducing features that changed how many of us experience music. While Microsoft may be sunsetting the Zune brand now, there’s still a lot to learn about Microsoft’s musical foray. This is that story.
Goodbye Zune, Hello Xbox Music
My favorite announcement at Microsoft’s E3 press conference wasn’t even a game. Sure, there are legions ready to tear Microsoft asunder for announcing as many services like ESPN and Univision as they were games like Halo 4 or South Park, but that’s really just part of the equation at this point. You simply can’t have a powerful, internet-enabled piece of silicon without some extra responsibilities these days. Before E3, I’d started writing a piece on the life and death of Zune and with today’s announcement, Zune is now officially dead. Read the rest of this article…
