Engadget Reveals New Web Site, Shines Brighter Than The Content

No, I’m not a fan of the typeface in the highlight box being different than everything else.

Yesterday, Aol’s big tech blog unveiled a major redesign that, admittedly, is probably the best thing they’ve done since Topolsky and crew left. The content is still pretty light, I’m not a fan of ripping out review scores, and they’ve been chasing features other sites have actually done proper, but this part they got pretty right and you should check it out for that part at least. What did they improve? Well…

Chris Roberts’ Star Citizen Crowd Funding Finishes At Over $6M

OMG SPACESHIPS!!!11ONE

A few weeks ago, I wrote about Chris Roberts’ upcoming space sim “Star Citizen” and again a couple of days ago I wrote about the idea of getting back in to a space sim got me so amped up that I’d been sucked back in to X3:Albion Prelude. Well, as of this afternoon Chris Roberts site, robertsspaceindustries.com, has stopped accepting crowd funding and has announced their total.

Are You Skipping The Wii U?

Are You Skipping The Wii U?

Nintendo’s finally reaching out to core gamers, but are any going to sink their dollars into it?

Y’know, when the Gamecube launched, I had a little bit of enthusiasm for it. The Xbox broke my trepidation on buying a console as a gaming machine (PC GAMES FOREVER YO) and the thought of playing a new Mario game and Eternal Darkness was a pretty interesting draw. The console didn’t do fantastic and Nintendo lost more of their stead against the competition following the disappointing Nintendo 64. I skipped the Wii, but Nintendo seems to be trying its best to lure me back with games like ZombiU, but why isn’t it working?

“Call of Duty: Black Ops 2” Review: This is the Campaign I’ve Been Waiting For

Bang, bang! Guns are fun to shoot.

It’s that time of year again for another installment in the Call of Duty series. This year, it’s Treyarch’s turn to show us what they got. Usually thought of as the B team, Treyarch, has stepped up and delivered what I think is one of the best campaign experiences in recent FPS and the best in the Call of Duty series. Unfortunately the multiplayer doesn’t live up to that. This was so close to being the best Call of Duty in the series. Read the rest of this article…

‘A Scanner Darkly’ Review: A Classic Animated Tale About Drugs

‘A Scanner Darkly’ Review: A Classic Animated Tale About Drugs

Watching these guys attempt to fix a car is literally art in motion.

You don’t need to be a fanatic about science fiction to know about Philip K. Dick’s work. Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, The Adjustment Bureau and many others are all adaptations of his work. Dick, while paranoid enough to avoid seeking help after a stroke that would lead to his death, was a benefactor of the genre, drafting many elements that we see as commonplace from his imagination. In 2005, Warner Independent Pictures unveiled the then-latest adaptation of his work, a far more literal interpretation than other previous flicks with a fraction of the budget – a mere $8 million – by filmmaker Richard Linklater (Before Sunset, School of Rock, Bernie). As soon as I saw the trailer (below) I wanted in.

The Comedy Review: Portrait of an Asshole

The Comedy Review: Portrait of an Asshole

Their boredom at being in this movie rivals my boredom in being forced to watch it.

Given enough time, any successful comedian will attempt to branch out and do drama. With The Comedy, Tim Heidecker (one-half of the Tim and Eric comedy duo) throws his hat in the dramatic ring. Eric Wareheim is also along for the ride here, too, but he’s given a small supporting role. Given that the comedy of Tim and Eric left us absolutely baffled in the past, I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that I don’t quite know what to make of their attempt at drama. Is The Comedy actually a merciless satire of shiftless, obnoxious hipsters? Is it supposed to be a sympathetic character study of self-consciously disaffected upper-class snob? Or is it something in between? I occasionally pondered these questions while watching The Comedy, but by the time the movie faded to black, I didn’t care anymore. The Comedy is nothing more than the portrait of an asshole.

Are You Enjoying Black Ops 2’s Zombies Mode?

Are You Enjoying Black Ops 2’s Zombies Mode?

IN YOUR FACE THESE BULLETS GO.

Because it’s a Treyarch year, this year’s iteration of Call of Duty features a Zombies mode, because that’s pretty cool. I was always a Modern Warfare guy, and zombies aren’t really my thing anyway, so this was my first time capping undead brains (poorly) in one of these games. Kels and I went at it (with video below!) and I had some thoughts on the matter.
