Nokia, Stop Wasting Your Talent And Make An Android Phone Already

I rock at Photoshop, guys. Photo credit: Wired

It’s been nearly two years since Nokia announced, before a truly precipitous change in fortune, they would be abandoning their once insanely popular Symbian OS and embracing Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform full-time for all of its smartphones. The coup, lead by newly-installed CEO Stephen Elop – and coincidentally, former Microsoft VP – seemed to be a huge leg up for Steve Ballmer’s camp as Windows Phone had failed to gain any market traction. Well, after two years, Microsof’t’s mobile platform has still failed to gain traction. So it makes sense that I plead, before Microsoft’ sinks Nokia’s boat entirely, that the Finnish phone giant should really take a stab at Android. It really, really should.

Does Instagram’s New Privacy Policy & Terms of Service Cross The Line?

Does Instagram’s New Privacy Policy & Terms of Service Cross The Line?

Just when I was going to be using it more…

In January Instagram will be enforcing a new privacy policy and terms of service that some are calling Instagram’s “suicide note.” Why? Because the new terms states that “some or all of the Service may be supported by advertising revenue. To help us deliver interesting paid or sponsored content or promotions, you agree that a business or other entity may pay us to display your username, likeness, photos (along with any associated metadata), and/or actions you take, in connection with paid or sponsored content or promotions, without any compensation to you.” Read the rest of this article…

Philips Invents Way To Make Lights Out Of Surfaces, Is So Awesome

The resolution isn’t great yet, but hey, they’re working on it.

We’ve been awfully fascinated lately with lighting. We’re hip on what’s hip, so when it comes to the light bulb, arguably the information age’s most important invention, we’re of the opinion that it’s way out of chic. We don’t just want neutral, pointed light. We wanted in different colors, we want it to have themes, we just want something that isn’t just the damn light bulb. Philips is hearing our call by showing us the future in which any surface could potentially be a light. Awesome, right?

Twitter: Hurry Up And Let Me Download My Tweet Archive

Hmmm, that Klout could be a little higher…

When Facebook launched Timeline last year, I was super excited. Yeah, lots of people moaned about the new layout because that’s their prerogative, but my favorite addition was the ability to easily view my older posts. Rather than forcing you to keep loading an infinite log of past entries until your browser crashed, the Timeline allows you to simply pick a portion of time and see what you were doing back then. I’m not happy with the fact that they abbreviated much of that content, but c’est la vie. Twitter, however, has abstained from letting you view your oldest content for, as they describe, technical reasons. Well, it looks like it won’t be long until you can see your earliest content. That’s probably scarier than it sounds.

Product Review – Turtle Beach Ear Force Sierra – Black Ops II Edition

The Turtle Beach Ear Force Sierra – Black Ops II Edition

Turtle Beach sent us a couple of their headsets – The Sierra and the Tango – for testing and review. We got ahold of them just over a week ago and have put them through the paces, in a pretty serious way. From analyzing them on various testing equipment through using them to play various games and watch movies, we ran them around in circles.

Here’s what I thought of the Sierra.

Samsung, Does The World Need A Phone With A 6.3″ Display?

Samsung, Does The World Need A Phone With A 6.3″ Display?

Like this, but a little smaller. Not by much.

Word is leaking around the globe that the next iteration of Samsung’s mammoth Galaxy Note phone (or phone/tablet (or phablet)) is expected to hit a gargantuan 6.3″ next year. That’s pretty ridiculous, but Samsung claims that it’s filling a gap in their size spectrum between their popular smartphones and their smallest tablets. Considering the success of their Note phones (despite some industry expectations), it makes sense that bigger might be better, but how big is too big?

Facebook Android App Ditches HTML 5, App Twice As Fast

Facebook logo…

This summer Facebook released an update to their iOS ditching HTML 5 to run on native code. This move was awesome because it sped up the app so much. I was saddened to see that the Android version was still on HTML 5 and I was back to the same issues there was on the iPhone and missing some awesome features. Well that all changed today with the app update. Read the rest of this article…

For Only $99, 23andMe Can Reveal The Exciting Wonder (Or Absolute Horror) Of Your Own Genetics

Bring it on, genetic sequencing!

Nowadays, you can’t use your smartphone without partaking in some sort of cloud storage that’s undeniably you, everywhere. Whether it’s your Google or Mac ID, your pictures, your music, so forth, we rely on the idea that somewhere out there, our information is being stored securely and we can retrieve it at any time. But there’s another form of secure storage out there that’s extremely close to us and still relatively untapped. It’s our DNA. Common to any living organism, geneticists have only begun to understand what those 3 billion base pairs mean and what functionality (or lack thereof) they provide us as human beings. For $99, genomics company 23andMe will examine your permanent source code and provide you some pretty interesting information on who you are as a person, whether you may like it or not.

Why Does Windows 8 Keeps Freezing On Me?

Where is the stop freezing option?

Windows 8 has been running very smooth for me since I installed it. Yesterday, however, my computer locked up on me twice. No blue screen of death or anything, just completely frozen. Read the rest of this article…

$550 Gets You A Samsung Galaxy Camera On Verizon LTE, Perhaps Made Of Gold

It’s a camera running full-blown Android. What else do you want?

Earlier this year, I surveyed Samsung’s new Galaxy Camera, which is an Android-powered device married to a larger-than-your-average-smartphone’s light sensor and a mechanical zoom. I though it was a beautiful idea and now the camera that can do it all is appearing in its various forms here in the States. Samsung has now officially announced that you can get the device with a Verizon LTE radio for high-speed cellular transmission (most) anywhere. But, there are some downsides.
