Does Microsoft’s Xbox One DRM Reversal Mitigate Their Long-Term Strategy?
A short-term victory may cost them a big goal.
(Yes, it’s confirmed, check the update below.) If word from Giant Bomb’s ever-reliable Patrick Klepek is to be believed, then Microsoft is ready to ditch the DRM tentpole of their Xbox One strategy that’s received such an epic backlash over the past week. My question then is whether this will mitigate the Xbox One’s long tail, as I defended on our conferences podcast, in trying to become a robust digital retailer like Steam.

The premise was simple – compress the entire keyboard into a single line that didn’t take up 40% of your display’s real estate – but it was obvious there was a lot of masterful engineering required behind the scenes, much of it done in time for their pitch. Despite the Play Store’s best attempts to hold it back, the beta keyboard is now finally getting out and about and I’ve now had my time with it. So how does it work?

5 Games You Missed At E3 2013
Stare directly into the eye.
In years past, E3 was usually a show where I focused on the big dogs: the Microsofts, the Sonys, the Activisions, but with the rise of crowdfunding and my growing distaste for the gaming zeitgeist’s lack of innovation, I made sure to spend plenty of time with the indie developers of this year’s show. Of course, the small-timers and oddities of E3 used to take up an entire hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center (Remember Kentia!) but are now a Battlestar Galactica-esque convoy of dreams and wishes. That didn’t deter me, though! Here are just a few of my favorites.

Doesn’t matter how they look, they did the work they needed to do! …I’m talking about the shoes.
I don’t like wearing shoes. For one, it’s a hassle – I mean, you have to put on the socks and the shoes after all, step by step, on and on… – but for two, I just like the feel of not having two big surfboards below my feet. Running took an unusual toll on my knees and the act of putting on (and subsequently removing) shoes became another reason to avoid it, so I just stopped in the weeks leading up to E3, an event I knew would exact a physical toll I wasn’t used to. So I started looking for new shoes.
