Let’s Play Minecraft: Trial of the Amiaba Ruins!

NICK HAS NO FACE, HA HA HA!

Well I’m back playing Minecraft again and this time Nick decided to join me. We searched hard and wide (15 minutes) for an awesome newer co-op map and we found one, The Trial of the Amiaba Ruins, made by rookie map maker WillM. We set out on our journey with the bright idea of using the 1.3 pre-release and setting up a local game so I didn’t have to set up a server online. That didn’t turn out as planned. Dead Trigger Review: Insert Coin To Shoot Zombie

I’m not a math student, but this seems like a pretty easy equation.

Free to play games seem to be popping up everywhere, some seem really great, and others let their reliance on micro-transactions drag them under the water line. While originally offered for a mere $.99, developer MADFINGER Games felt obliged to give it away on the Google Play Store because of rampant piracy of the game. Oh sure, you can play Dead Trigger for free, but it’s not long before the game bares its teeth.

Nexus 7 Review: The Tablet For The Rest Of Us?

The mythological Nexus tablet has arrived, but can it compete?

We’ve waited a long time for the Nexus tablet; for proof that Google really wants to compete against the iPad. Hardware with the flagship Nexus moniker is co-designed by Google and granted not only the latest and greatest versions of Android, but tend to be high-quality hardware as well. Google said they wanted to spread the Nexus branding amongst their partners and Asus is the latest to join the stable of privileged. While Android dominates in the smartphone market, shoehorning it onto tablets has net lukewarm results, proving that the iPad success story is far more exception than rule. But does the Nexus 7 make enough headway as a tablet to lead Google’s hardware partners to the promised land of tablet dominance? And does it cure my indifference to tablets altogether?

E3 To Stay In Los Angeles Until 2015, Avoid Santa Monica Situation

E3’s home sweet home for the forseeable future.

Today the Entertainment Software Association (or the ESA, for the rest of us) informed us that their world-famous Electronic Entertainment Expo (or E3, for the rest of us) will remain in Los Angeles. The organization, which represents hundreds of gaming entities and runs the world’s largest gaming show, had some trepidation about staying in Los Angeles with Farmer’s Field about to be placed where the current West Hall stands. Well, it looks like hugs and kisses made their rounds and E3 will be locked into Los Angeles until at least 2015. We, of course, will be there.

Castle Story, An Exciting New Minecraft-ish Strategy Game, Beats Kickstarter Goal On First Day

Build, my minions! Build!

When Kelly tipped me off to this a few months ago, I was immediately excited. Take a classic real-time strategy game like Command & Conquer or Stronghold and implement brick-by-brick detail. Or, take Minecraft and zoom out a bit, allowing you to command workers to build your structures exactly as you see fit. Throw in a dash of Dungeon Keeper or even The Settlers and you have Sauropod Studios’ Castle Story, which is already making bank months from release. Another indie gaming smash in the making?

Cloud Atlas Six-Minute Trailer Reveals Tom Hanks And A Beautiful Mess

Cloud Atlas Six-Minute Trailer Reveals Tom Hanks And A Beautiful Mess

After watching the trailer, this seems to make the MOST sense.

Remember the Wachowskis? Y’know, the director duo who brought us both The Matrix and Speed Racer? They’ve been lurking for a bit, but together with Run Lola Run director Tom Tykwer they’ve now released a six-minute sizzle reel for their next project: Cloud Atlas. Somehow, I’m left with more questions coming out of it than I did going in.

The Watch Review: How Did Things Go So Terribly Wrong?

The Watch Review: How Did Things Go So Terribly Wrong?

As I walked out of a showing of The Watch, I found myself wondering how a movie showcasing so much talent could be so aggressively mediocre and unfunny. Akiva Shaffer, one-third of the fantastic The Lonely Island and director of the criminally underrated Hot Rod, takes on directing duties; the screenplay comes from Seth Rogen and Evan Golberg; and the film stars Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, and Richard Ayoade – all actors who have proven themselves capable of being hilarious in at least one or two roles in their careers. This again begs the question: How the hell is The Watch not the funniest movie of the past five years, and furthermore, why is it so goddamn boring?

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai Review: Sometimes Less Is More

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai Review: Sometimes Less Is More

I think director Masaki Kobayashi’s Harakiri (1962) is the finest Samurai film ever made. Even better than the Lone Wolf and Cub films or Akira Kurosawa’s work in the genre. I’m sure any real film critics out there who may have accidentally stumbled upon this corner of the internet will be screaming for my head at this point, but I could care less. Harakiri (1962) comes as close as any movie can possibly get to being flawless, and I recommend it to anyone—even people who don’t care about Samurai flicks. So it almost goes without saying that maverick director Takashi Miike was left with some gigantic shoes to fill when he took it upon himself to direct the remake. Miike doesn’t improve on the original film, but to his credit, he doesn’t do the material an injustice either.
