Dear Disney, Please Don’t Run Star Wars Into The Ground

Imagine this, but much, much more!

This article’s headline seems like a cruel joke after we spent six years putting up with George Lucas’s prequel trilogy, but Lucas had something going on in his favor: scarcity. With three years between movies and only three movies, as he claimed, left in the saga, the movies felt more epic because their quantities were less. With some recent transactions, Disney is the new owner of all these old Lucas heirlooms and have framed some grand designs for the next decade and it includes a lot of Star Wars. A lot more Star Wars. Is it really for the better, though?

3 Reasons Why ‘Super Wi-Fi’ Is Crap

The US of Fi

The telecom industry you know and love (AT&T, T-Mobile, Intel, Qualcomm, etc) are sweating buckets over the governments plan to provide free Wi-Fi across the country. You might as well get out your sweat rag.

UPDATE: I’d like to thank the journalistic integrity of the Washington Post for spinning the super Wi-Fi into a huge media fabrication. Anyways, I stand by my original statement – it’s crap.

Fast & Furious 6 Extended Trailer Released, Watch it Now!

Someone just got capped.

It’s been two years since Fast Five was released shocking both Nick & myself at how awesome of a movie it was. Especially after I made Nick watch the first couple of movies. We knew there was going to be a follow up to Fast Five with the teaser of Michelle Rodriguez in the ending credits. During the Super Bowl this past weekend we were shown a 30 second spot for Fast & Furious 6 but that wasn’t enough to satisfy. Well feast your eyes below and checkout the 3 minute extended trailer and go see it in theaters on May 27th! Read the rest of this article…

Rob’s Tech School Part 4 – Audio (Part 2)

The beauty of sound

Yesterday I started a 2 part lesson on audio and what all those goofy terms that get thrown at you by all of the equipment manufacturers mean, as part of a bigger series on technical stuff, where I talk about frame rates, video resolutions, audio goodness, etc. I talked about frequency response and dynamic range and told you that today I would be talking about dB (decibels) and signal to noise ratio.

Both of these things are pretty important as well because they are constantly used when giving performance stats on audio hardware.

So what do they mean?

Look at these displays! These are all yours!

Have you ever played a cyberpunk game like Deus Ex and wondered why you weren’t typing on a virtual keyboard with your keyboard, hacking each camera, door, and trap line by line, rather than just pushing some easy buttons? Do you really feel like a hacker when you’re hacking with a mouse or a few face buttons? That’s not real hacking, that’s for poseurs. Quadrilateral Cowboy from Blendo Studios wants you to get into the nitty gritty and script your way through and past a score of defenses. Are you hardcore enough for that?

Now that we’re on the subject of games and more specifically Gears of War, let’s talk about Gear of War: Judgment. You know, the prequel to the other games in the series and follows around Lt. Rob’s Tech School Part 3 – Audio (Part 1)

Music to my ears

Signal to noise ratio…Frequency response…Surround Sound…dB…Dynamic range.

These are all terms you’re going to come into contact with when you’re out and about looking at any kind of audio gear. From headsets to speakers to ear buds, you’re going to see this stuff all the time. Since most people aren’t audiophiles or trained audio engineers, I figured I’d take a few minutes to put something together which covers just what in the hell these terms mean, and how they relate to what we want when we’re out lo0king to spend our hard-earned dough.

‘House Of Cards’ Review: You’ll Be Thankful You Can Marathon This

‘House Of Cards’ Review: You’ll Be Thankful You Can Marathon This

About ten times more effective here than as Lex Luthor.

Let’s cut to the chase: this is the future. As a rule, you can’t talk about Netflix’s new political drama House of Cards without mentioning how innovative its arrival is. This isn’t the first time a show has ever been released as an entire season online simultaneously, nor is it the first time Netflix has done it, but with all due respect to Lilyhammer’s “New York Gangster Lands In Sweden” premise, this is the first time they’ve done it with a show I can make it past the second episode. House of Cards, a $100 million investment for the guys who once delivered discs in red envelopes to your door, is built for the service end-to-end. The episodes don’t feel like discrete plates of drama, they feel like casual breaks in the series’ tempo, which helps the fact that you don’t need to wait until next week to pick up the next episode. I’ll try to keep SPOILERS as light as possible.

Bullet to the Head Review: Dead on Arrival

Bullet to the Head Review: Dead on Arrival

HGH in action.

Bullet to the Head left me surprised at its aggressive mediocrity. I should have known better. It’s not like Sylvester Stallone has one of the best track records in the history the Hollywood. And yet, I can’t conceal my disappointment with this flick. And the reason for the disappointment is this: Bullet to the Head united Sylvester Stallone with director Walter Hill. If Walter Hill’s name doesn’t ring any bells with you, know this: he’s one of the filmmakers who, along with the James Cameron and John McTiernan, helped shape the modern action movie. Responsible for producing the Alien franchise and for directing The Warriors, 48 Hrs, and Last Man Standing, Walter Hill is one of the largely unsung heroes of the action genre. Unfortunately, you wouldn’t know that from watching Bullet to the Head.

Warm Bodies Review: Zombie Love

They’re dead, but they’re getting better.

A guy walks into a pharmacy and sees a girl. It’s love at first sight. So he eats the eats the girl’s boyfriend, kidnaps her, takes her home, and forces her to listen to his vinyl collection until she falls in love with him. That’s the plot of Warm Bodies in a nutshell, and you know what? It’s still a more psychologically sound basis for romantic relationship than anything that was depicted in the Twilight franchise.
