Kickstarter Celebrates All Those Games You Funded With Kickstarter’s Help

The One Campaign To Rule Them All

You heard about a lot of gaming Kickstarter campaigns this past year. We wrote about a lot of them ourselves. So it makes sense that Kickstarter, as a relatively new company, would take a moment and thank you for using their platform to allow many new gaming projects to exist. From Double Fine’s definitive Kickstarter effort to Chris Roberts’ return to space simming, we’re happy that Kickstarter is around. So are they.

My Most-Used Productivity Apps For Android In 2012

If you don’t have these apps, get ’em.

Chances are you got a new Android phone this holiday, but you’re pining for some apps to get your phone to be the most productive it can be. The nine apps above ended up being the most important in my collection and while some come stock on the phone, I still found myself reaching for them regularly with some new additions for 2012 over last year’s edition. Also, if you’re not using SwiftKey, you should be.

Mionix Naos 8200 Gaming Mouse Review

Mionix Naos 8200 Gaming Mouse Review

The Mionix Naos 8200 gaming mouse. How does it stack up?

A couple of weeks ago, the folks over at Mionix offered me the opportunity to get my hands on the Naos 8200 gaming mouse, the newest in their line of high end gaming mice. Of course I jumped at the opportunity to see if anything out there could give my Razer Mamba a run for its money, without costing hundreds of dollars. A couple of days later the FedEx guy dropped the mouse off and I dove in to the box like a kid at Christmas.

OUYA Ships Developer Consoles On Time

OUYA, user interface mockup

A few days ago, OUYA, sent an update to all the backers letting them know they sent off 1,200 developer consoles to developers around the world. They also released an unboxing video showing off the first run special developer consoles. They are translucent, rooted and ready to go straight from the box. They know there are bugs and the controller isn’t perfect, but this give developers a chance to find bugs and submit feedback before OUYA does a production run for the masses. Sony Discontinues PlayStation 2 In Japan, Era Begins its End

Sony Discontinues PlayStation 2 In Japan, Era Begins its End

Still a hideous console.

Hard to believe, but March marks the thirteenth anniversary of the PlayStation 2’s release in Japan. It’ll also mark one of the last times that you’ll be able to purchase the console in its home country before the last shipment to retailers sells out. Americans flew to Japan to acquire one of these consoles at nearly $400 a pop (lots of dough in 2000!), long before the console’s October release in North America that year. It’s still one of the ugliest consoles I’ve ever seen and while I’m a bit of a hater, the PS2’s legacy involves a lot of popular games that defined a generation.

Tomb Raider, Now With Multiplayer For Better Or Worse

Tomb Raider, Now With Multiplayer For Better Or Worse

Imagine this, but with point totals in the corner.

Word has now leaked across the internet that the latest edition of Official Xbox Magazine will be revealing a whole new side to Tomb Raider: multiplayer. The once-solo adventure, already somewhat controversial in its tackling of mature topics, is now being fitted with a variety of multiplay modes developed by Eidos Montreal, developer of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. This is either the best idea or the worst idea, but I have no doubt it came down to one thing: money.

Django Unchained Review: Quentin Tarantino’s Best Movie Since Pulp Fiction

Django Unchained Review: Quentin Tarantino’s Best Movie Since Pulp Fiction

Just see the movie.

If you’re reading this and you haven’t seen Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained, I highly recommend that you see it now. Don’t even bother to finish reading this review. Just grab your wallet and head for the nearest cinema. You’ll either thank me or curse me later, but I can guarantee that you won’t forget the experience of seeing this movie in theaters. Equal parts Blaxploitation flick and Spaghetti Western, Django Unchained is perhaps the most unique “Western” to ever come out of Hollywood. It’s exceedingly clever, excessively violent, and brimming with wild, creative energy. It’s vintage Tarantino. And it’s also the best thing the man has directed since 1994’s Pulp Fiction.

This Is 40 Review: Better Than Funny People

This Is 40 Review: Better Than Funny People

So, so much better than Funny People.

There’s one moment in This Is 40 that perfectly encapsulates Judd Apatow’s brand of comedy. A married couple (played by Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann) lock themselves in their bedroom. Mann offers to give Rudd, who is dressed in an awkward cycling outfit, a quick blow job. He consents and they start going to town. However, not ten seconds pass before their two daughters are banging on the bedroom door, screaming at each other and their parents. The girls, of course, have no idea what their parents are doing. Rudd and Mann try to ignore the children, but pretty soon they’re both screaming back at the daughters as shrilly as their daughters are screaming at them. The scene still amounts to a prolonged dick joke, but there’s an additional awkwardness. This Is 40 represents a continuation of Apatow’s effort to either elevate the dick joke (the bread and butter of all R-rated comedies) or abandon it altogether.

‘Minecraft: The Story Of Mojang’ Review: A Half-Baked Tribute

‘Minecraft: The Story Of Mojang’ Review: A Half-Baked Tribute

Unlike the game it covers, you can’t simply mash blocks of footage together and make it work.

If you asked me today what the best game of the past decade was, it would be Minecraft. Easily. I’ve turned in hundreds of hours across a variety of servers mining, crafting, building, and destroying worlds populated with billions of blocks. Minecraft became a global phenomenon because it was the first MMO-style game that allowed for both the intimacy of your own projects and the ability to grow communities in a world that can be edited as much as you’d like. 2 Player Productions (Penny Arcade TV’s first season, the new Double Fine Adventure documentary) has been working on The Story of Mojang for years, having launched a Kickstarter to document the development of the game and its influence on the world and gaming culture. Unfortunately, its haphazard construction left me wanting.
